Chapter X

The Druid had been more off course than he’d thought, but less than he and Naitachal feared; by late afternoon the next day, he was able to find a trail he recognized that took them to a good place to camp. They rode into the clearing well before dark and the Druid waved an arm that encompassed the area. There are plenty of roots, and it is still early enough in the season for ground berries. There is water that way he indicated a narrow animal trail which went north into thick brush and there are cresses, or were the last time I stopped here.

Naitachal dismounted rather cautiously he had found himself stiff when the Druid woke him early this morning for the final watch, and he hadn’t yet been able to ease the discomfort. He cast a dark glance at the back of the bardling’s head as Gawaine threw one leg across Thunder’s back and dropped neatly to the ground

I will tend the horses, unless anyone objects, the bardling offered.

Raven smiled and handed his makeshift reins over. When you care so well for my poor beast, why should I mind? Unless Bard, if you have a better suggestion? Naitachal leaned on Star’s back and looked at them both blankly. The Druid repeated his question.

Eh? Oh, certainly, whatever you like. As Gawaine turned away, hands full of reins, the Bard caught

Raven’s eye and beckoned. As soon as I have set the wards and eaten I will sleep until my watch. Unless you have a difficulty with this holy man of ours, he added very softly. If so, then rouse me.

Raven’s brow puckered. Is there any problem? You seem distracted.

Naitachal managed a faint chuckle and a smile he didn’t particularly feel: The Druid had put his finger on the problem all too neatly. Just a feeling of something about that does not wish us well, nothing more specific than that.

I see. Raven considered this in silence for some moments, opened his mouth to speak, but closed it again as the lizardman and his valet passed close by. He sent his eyes one way and then the other, made certain they were alone again, and lowered his own voice prudently. Perhaps there is nothing I can do to aid you, but if there is, please tell me what and how. Meantime, I will make my own watch. Though, he shrugged, we are in the midst of a very old forest, one which was old when my many-times great-grandsire was born. And in such a woods, particularly so far north well, there are always things which do not understand the likes of us, and others which actively ill-wish us. He smiled, spread his hands in a shrug. Still others which might consider us and our mounts a fine meal. Naitachal cast his eyes heavenwards, though in this clearing the treetops were so far overhead and so thick, there was in truth very little sky to be seen. The Druid looked around. Here comes your apprentice and the peasant lad.
